Before helping them in any way, you need first to make sure, whether they are choking or they are gagging. The best way to determine that is by listening to any noise they might be making. If they are making any noise, then they are gagging and not choking. Gagging is something children do when they are learning to eat or when they are trying something new. This is a reflex action that children do, and this protects them from choking, so gagging should be encouraged in children.
However, if they are not making any noise, then that is when they are choking. Their expressions might be of utter distress, and they wouldn’t be making any noise. Instead of getting distressed yourself, handle the situation calmly. First, get them out of the high chair they are sitting in, or wherever they might be, take them in your arms, and give them back blows. If back blows don’t work then try giving them chest thrusts, about five times.
If the child has started crying, that means you are successful in your endeavor but if the child is still not crying, then keep trying and call an ambulance.
