Christopher Rogers and Ashley Moritz left on the hunt for meteorites after hearing of the news that a meteor broke into pieces in the atmosphere across Michigan, US.

Amazingly, Ashley managed to find one 50-gram space rock buried in the snowbank of a lake and decided to put it up for auction.

After the couple failed to sell the authenticated rock for $12,000, Christopher, who is a former Navy Seal, decided to keep it close forever by fusing it into their wedding rings.

“Ashley is unique and only a totally unique ring would do,” he said, explaining that the meteorite is a part of wedding rings as well as Ashley’s engagement ring.

Speaking of their romantic wedding ceremony, Ashley added:

“It was the perfect day made even better by our rings. It ended up being a really cool way to keep a memory of this once-in-a-lifetime experience together.”

The pair first met in 2013 and became an item after discovering that they share a passion for adventures such as scuba diving. For that reason, they both immediately agreed to go on a hunt for the fallen meteorites after the meteor broke into pieces just some 40 miles away from their home.

“He sent me a message, saying: ‘Did you hear that giant boom?’” Ashley recalled.

“We were watching the news and it said that people were going out and looking for pieces. It was the middle of winter and Chris said: ‘Let’s go looking.’”

While the luck wasn’t on their side during the first day of searching, they returned once again on the following day thanks to Christopher’s persuasion.

“I thought it was flipping freezing and the chances were ridiculous but I said: ‘Ok, honey, let’s go again,’” Ashley admitted.

“We went out walking on a frozen lake and I found it in a pile of snow. There were dark leaves everywhere and every time I saw a piece that was dark, it was a leaf.

“But then I reached down and grabbed it and yelled: ‘Oh my God, this is not a leaf, it is a rock!’ It was magnetic and it looked like a burnt rock.”

After taking the piece to the Curator of Earth and Life Sciences, expert John Zawiskie confirmed that the rock was indeed a meteorite and that it was nearly 5 billion years old.

Following the authentication, the couple failed to sell the meteorite at an auction which is why they decided to embed small pieces of it into their wedding rings.

“It was difficult and tricky because it was the first time I had put a meteorite into any piece of jewelry,” Christopher’s friend and the owner of Skyline Diamond Setters, Ron Cleveland, said after fulfilling the couple’s wishes.

“We had to fit the setting just perfectly to inset that little piece of meteorite without damaging it at all. We sealed it in there and hopefully it will be in there for the rest of their lives.”
