You walk into a grocery store and you’re almost always greeted with the produce section first.

All of the bright colors and fresh smells inspire you to cook up something delicious and healthy. You pick out fruits and veggies to snack on while at work and to toss into your kids’ lunches.

But did you ever notice that when you pick up an apple or other piece of fruit it can feel waxy?

Sometimes you can even see a whitish film or reside on your fruit, and feel something greasy.

This is common because food manufacturers cover fruits like apples in wax to preserve them long enough for sale.

Don’t want to eat that nasty wax? Here’s how!

The wax that covers our produce is food grade, which means that it’s ok to eat. But let’s be honest that wax isn’t food and when you bite into an apple you don’t want to chew on a waxy skin.

If you don’t believe that your food is covered in wax, try this easy experiment. Buy a few apples from the store and pour boiling water over them. Let them sit for a few minutes and see what appears—that’s right, it’s a coating of wax.

Fortunately, there’s an easy way to remove the wax. And it’s well worth it.

All you need is some water, baking soda, and lemon juice. You probably already have these ingredients in your home, so don’t sweat running out to buy anything special.

Rub the lemon juice on the apple. Add baking soda to your water and rinse the apple. You can also rub the baking soda directly on the apple skin if you need.

This will remove the wax and make the apple safe to eat.

Always clean your fruits and veggies before you eat them. Not only will you run into wax, but you also need to worry about pesticides, which are chemicals that farmers use while growing your food. Even organic produce contains some pesticides.
