Five people have already died from the mysterious lung disease linked to vaping.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, around 450 people across 33 states in the United States have severe respiratory illness after using e-cigarettes.

A large percentage of the patients used cannabis-derived vaping products with THC while others said they had only smoked nicotine.

The CDC is now urging e-cig users to stop using their devices until they get to the root of the problem.

“While this investigation is ongoing, people should consider not using e-cigarette products,” said Dr. Dana Meaney-Delman.

“People who do use e-cigarette products should monitor themselves for symptoms, for example, cough, shortness of breath, chest pain, nausea and vomiting – and promptly seek medical attention for any health concerns.”

No infectious causes have been identified but according to CDC, the mysterious lung illnesses ‘are likely associated with a chemical exposure.’

Last week, New York health officials said the tests discovered vitamin E acetate in many vaping cartridges containing cannabis that had been given to people who developed illnesses. This is now ‘a key focus’ of the investigation, they said.

The Food and Drug Administration is also analyzing samples from other substances and warns people to ‘think twice’ before buying any vaping cartridges from unregulated sources.

“With these increasing reports,” said Mutch Zeller, director of the FDA’s Centre for Tobacco Products.

“If you’re thinking of purchasing one of these products off the street, out of the back of a car, out of a trunk, in an alley – or if you are then going to go home and make modifications to the product yourself using something that you purchased from some third party or got from a friend – think twice.”
