According to the new suggestions brought forward at the Moscow Kremlin, Russian President Vladimir Putin could become the country’s Supreme Leader after his presidency.
As the palace announced, proposed changes to the constitution suggest that the current president of Russia could become a Supreme Leader.
While the Kremlin has insisted that Putin “has no view” on the matter, the suggestion was brought forward by a government commission with the aim of allowing Putin to “rule for life” even after his term ends in 2024.
“There are… some very curious proposals among those put forward. For instance, they proposed renaming the position of head of state to ‘Supreme leader,’” commission co-chair Pavel Krasheninnikov told Rossiiskaya Gazeta as he opened up about the recent government overhaul.
“Right now all this is at the discussion stage. President Putin has no view on this,” a spokesperson for Kremlin, Dmitry Peskov, added.
Among other controversial proposals of changes to the constitution, Orthodox Christianity could be recognized as the prime religion in the country, whereas Russia could be declared the “victorious power” of World War 2.
Speaking of Russia, the country has recently closed its eastern border amid fears that the novel coronavirus could spread from China into the country that is home to more than 140 million people.
In a desperate attempt to prevent the outbreak from forcing its way into Russia after China revealed there are confirmed cases over all parts of the country, the Russian government has closed its eastern border.
As Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin announced, Russia would do “everything it could to protect its people.”
In addition to the closed border, Russia has started blocking Chinese tourist groups from entering and announced they would no longer issue electronic visas to Chinese people.
Russia has also limited railway connections with China whereas only direct links between the two countries’ capitals, Moscow and Beijing, were kept.
