TV bosses in Russia are to be ‘punished’ after Vladimir Putin was ‘beheaded’ during his New Year speech.
The news channel in Kaliningrad blamed a ‘technical glitch’ for the embarrassing blunder.
As the President spoke to Russians, only the lower half of his head was visible. His eyes and forehead were cut out as he delivered his New Year speech from Kremlin.
The 68-year-old’s yearly address is traditionally broadcast several minutes before midnight in each of the country’s eleven time zones.
Kaskad TV staff stopped the broadcast as soon as they saw the error on both the internet and television, replacing the message with music.
Bosses at the station explained in a statement: “Problems with the image during the broadcast of Vladimir Putin’s New Year address were caused by a technical glitch in the broadcasting room.
“An investigation of the incident is ongoing. Those who are guilty will be punished. Kaskas Media Group offers sincere apologies to the viewers.”
However, Kaskad TV did not apologize to the President.
Videos of the incident were recorded by shocked viewers and the blunder sparked thousands of comments.
The President used the broadcast to lament about the issues caused by coronavirus and urged people to have faith in themselves.
“True, the new dangerous virus has changed and turned upside down the customary mode of life, work and studies, and it forced a revision of and amendments to many plans,” Putin said.
“But such is our world that the trials of life are unavoidable.
“Today, it is especially important to believe in ourselves, not to retreat in the face of difficulties, to preserve our unity, as this is the basis of our future common success.
“I am sure we will overcome everything together, we will restore and maintain normal life, and keep solving tasks that Russia faces.”
