A video captured an eerie moment a corpse appeared to move inside the casket during a funeral.
The horrifying clip, filmed in Manado, Indonesia, shows grieving relatives and friends gathered around the coffin while a priest reads a prayer.
“God has said in the book of John. I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me he will live even though he is dead,” the priest says in the clip.
Only seconds later, the hand seems to wave or press against the coffin lid.
The video, which was filmed on May 5, quickly went viral and locals suggested the body was trying to escape from the casket but it is not clear if anyone checked the corpse.
But the most likely explanation is that the body was moving because of the changes that occur in the body after death.
One internet user wrote online: “Yes, he waved, maybe he was still alive and try to dig his way out.”
Another wrote: “That wasn’t a body moving because of decomp, that was a person who raised her hand and brushed it across the glass. How terrifying!”
A third added: “That’s why in some cultures, they don’t bury their dead straight away but waited 3, 5, 7 days or even weeks. Some even don’t bury their dead but just leave them in some place so as to be visible and seen from time to time. It would be interesting to ask those folks why they practice such death and funeral culture.”
A 2019 study conducted by researchers from Central Queensland University in Australia found that human bodies can move after death.
Researchers found that human remains can change their position even without external ‘assistance.’
In an interview with ABC, researcher Alyson Wilson said: “What we found was that the arms were significantly moving, so that arms that started off down beside the body ended up out to the side of the body.
“We think the movements relate to the process of decomposition, as the body mummifies and the ligaments dry out. This knowledge could be significant in unexplained death investigations.”
Dr. Xanthe Mallett, a professor who supervised the study, also said: “What isn’t known is that the body moves as part of the decomposition process and it’s the first time that it’s been captured, as far as I know.”
