A 98-year-old world war hero who fought in the military operation known as the D-Day celebrated V-E Day after surviving cancer three times and beating COVID-19.
Fred McQueen is an inspirational grandfather who fought in the Second Guards Armed Division and was one of the first soldiers to land on the shores of Normandy on D-Day back in June 1944.
As the war hero’s proud daughter revealed, her father beat “three types of cancer, bladder, bowel, and kidney” in his life.
“He has had three types of cancer, bladder, bowel and kidney. He has lymphedema now and he is blind in one eye. But he has an attitude of ‘I’ll get through it,’” Joan Embleton, the veteran’s daughter, expressed.
As Fred’s granddaughter added, her grandfather was recently also diagnosed with COVID-19 whereas the family feared the worst due to his age and underlying health conditions.
“As soon as we found out he had tested positive, we got really upset. We couldn’t see him or talk to him and we thought the worst. We didn’t think he would survive it,” Suzanne Mullen said.
“But he just keeps going. He is definitely a hero and we absolutely love him.”
As the family claimed, Fred dismissed their worries over his health situation by saying: “I fought in the war, this is nowt [nothing].”
Just like he survived the world war and three cancers, Fred has also recovered from coronavirus just in time to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the V-E Day (Victory in Europe Day) and honor the fallen heroes who lost their lives in the second world war.
