That’s when it was discovered that Hicks was only using a stove to keep warm.

Officer Chastity Salazar took a look around Hick’s home and “had realized that he’s using the oven. I know that’s not safe. His gas is on.”

Salazar then reached out to her coworkers and police officers knocked on his front door. This time, they brought a heater for his home.

The heater was only the first step showing the WWII veteran some appreciation for his military service and also heaps of love.

Hicks then received an electric fireplace installed in his house.

Officer Bino Cadenas visits Hicks regularly and made a list of items he wished he could have, such as underwear, shirts, peanuts, and chips.

Hicks became very emotional and admitted that asking for help is something he wouldn’t want to do.

“I’ve never had no one to do nothing for me,” he expressed. “After my mother passed away and left me to take care of my two sisters — nobody never did nothing to help me.”

“You hate to ask anybody ’cause sometimes they’ll frown on you, and I’m a true veteran,”emotional  Hicks added. “I won’t ask. I won’t ask.”

Officer Salazar is also thankful that the WWII veteran is getting the help he needs. “He’s just offered me a lot of kindness, too,” she said.

“So to know that he’s also served, and now I’m able to serve and give back to people like him.”
