93-year-old WWII veteran Raymond Chambers received his medals after nearly sixty years.
Chambers, who served in the Navy special forces during World War II, was shot in the leg during the Battle of Iwo Jima.
But, he told the doctors he was fine and kept on fighting.
He returned home to Michigan in 1946. He never received any medal for his service. And, he never thought he deserved it.
His wife, Mary Chambers, said: “I guess once he was done with the war he was done. He wanted to move on with his life.”
After six decades, the veteran went to a doctor as he was experiencing pain in his leg.
The doctor found out that it was a battle wound as he was shot in his leg during the war.
Marine veteran and Chambers’ friend Timothy Jay Read thought his friend deserved an award.
Chambers received medals for his service during a ceremony at the Jan Kaminis Platt Regional Library in Tampa, Florida in front of his wife, children, and grandchildren.
He received the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with two Bronze Stars, the American Campaign Medal, the Combat Action Ribbon and the World War II Victory Medal.
He celebrated the memorable day by playing a rendition of “God Bless America” on his harmonica.
