Andrea Martinez, from Utah, took her dachshund puppy named Ziggy to the vets after as he was struggling to breathe and was vomiting.

Martinez was told by the vets that her dog needed surgery to fix a blockage in his stomach and intestines. Martinez left her dog with the vets as she was told they would contact her after surgery.

However, she then received a call to tell her that Ziggy had died. Martinez told Local12: “He kept beating around the bush about it, but he was saying it like I should’ve known.”

Then, the vets realized their mistake and told her that they got confused and called the wrong owner to ask for consent for putting the dog to sleep.

She said: “He apologised and said, ‘I’m so sorry that this happened, we got confused and ended up calling another dog’s mum.'”

It turned out there was another dog named Ziggy and the vets called his owner in the middle of the surgery and told them that it would be ‘more expensive’.

They asked the wrong owner if they wanted to continue or want to put the dog to sleep and they chose to put the dog to sleep.

Martinez wrote on Facebook: “They let a stranger decide my dog’s fate. They robbed me the choice of saying ‘at least we tried’. I feel so sick and can’t stop crying.”

“How do you tell a 6-year-old her best friend died and we didn’t have a choice to try everything to stop him from dying. This whole thing seriously makes me so sick to my stomach.”

Later, the vets apologised for their mistake and gifted the owner a special Christmas tree ornament with Ziggy’s paw print on.

Martinez wrote in an update: “It was a honest mistake, they owned it, and are taking steps to make things okay. Ziggy was really sick and from the sounds of it I’m not sure he would’ve even made it after all said and done.”

“I do wish we would’ve had to chance to find out though, but life happens and we have to learn to adjust and learn and grow from it. I will forever miss him but at least I know he’s not in pain anymore.”
