Watch the little boy and the dog who are now the best of friends
Luca and Heidi Ferasin’s son, Mattia Ferasin was born with a hole in his heart.
Dr. Caner Salih, one of the cardiac surgeons who treated Mattia, revealed his French bulldog Büdu also suffered the same condition.
Mattia, from Four Marks, Hampshire, underwent a seven-hour operation and made a full recovery.
To return the favour, Mattia’s parents who both are veterinary cardiologists, decided to treat Dr. Caner Salih’s French bulldog Büdu.
Büdu has also made a full recovery and now, Mattia and Büdu are inseparable.
Heidi said: “We are forever indebted to the whole team of doctors who helped Mattia. Without their skill and knowledge of all the staff, we are well aware that we wouldn’t have Mattia with us now.”
Heidi said this is their way of giving something back because they are so grateful to Dr. Caner Salih and the staff who treated Mattia.
Heidi said: “We have always felt that we owe all the staff so much. Thanks to the surgery and the ongoing care of the cardiology team, Mattia is a thriving, healthy and happy little boy who just celebrated his fourth birthday.”
Heidi said that doctors had warned them there was a 10% chance of Mattia not surviving.
Dr. David Anderson led the even-and-a-half hour operation and Mattia made a full recovery.
When Dr. Salih said that his French bulldog Büdu also suffered the same condition, Luca and Heidi offered to treat him.
Dr. Salih said that Büdu has also made a full recovery. Büdu didn’t need surgery. Luca and Heidi just told Dr. Salih how to take care of his dog at home.
Within a year, Büdu’s hole in his heart closed without surgery.
Luca said: ‘When the image of the defect appeared on the screen of my ultrasound machine during Büdu’s examination, I was so surprised because it was one of the same congenital defects that Mattia had.”
“Büdu’s defect closed within a year, which was even more surprising. This outcome has only been reported in a couple of cases in veterinary history.”
Mattia and Büdu have now become the best of friends and often meet to play together.
