Renowned Italian clothing brand Versace has been heavily praised among animal rights activists after deciding to ban kangaroo skin from its products for good.
After being pressured by animal rights groups over their controversial practice of using kangaroo skin as leather in some of their products, Versace has confirmed ending “the use of kangaroo leather starting from the 2019 collections.”
As an animal rights group called LAV claimed, over 2 million kangaroos in Australia face a gruesome death on a yearly basis due to their skin being used in various products by companies from all around the world.
“We have been corresponding with Versace over email and they confirmed that in 2019 they stopped using kangaroo skin. We welcome this as a sign of responsibility, today more than ever,” Simone Pavesi of LAV expressed, saying that Versace’s decision represents a huge step forward.
“We showed the companies images and videos of how kangaroos are killed in such a brutal way. They understood the gravity of the situation and perhaps preferred not to give too much prominence to the fact that they were using kangaroo skin.”
While Versace responded to the Guardian to confirm “the use of kangaroo leather starting from the 2019 collections” has stopped, the company made no other statements on the matter.
Previously, in 2018, the Italian brand has also confirmed ending the use of real fur, whereas fashion designer and entrepreneur Donatella Versace claimed that fur wasn’t her style any longer.
“Fur? I am out of that. I don’t want to kill animals to make fashion. It doesn’t feel right,” the businesswoman said in an interview with The Economist.
