With dolphins being spotted in Caligari port, wild board strolling in the stress of Sardinia, air pollution dropped in several countries, ducks in fountains in Rome, and crystal clear water in canals in Venice, it seems that nature is claiming its spaces again during Covid-19 lockdown in Italy.
Since the shutdown of China due to coronavirus outbreak in the country, its air pollution level has decreased significantly around the affected areas. It appears that similar thing may happen in Italy as well, which has also gone into a nationwide lockdown.
A timelapse video has been released by ESA or the European Space Agency taken from space that shows how air pollution has diminished in the area. Even the water in Venice canals appears clearer due to the lockdown.
The Facebook group contains the images of ‘clean Venice’ where the locals are happily sharing the effect of lockdown.
Since no one is allowed to get out of their homes, the sediments in the canals have settled, which makes the water appear clearer. People even said that such a sight is visible to them for the first time.
One can even see the bottom of the canals and little fishes swimming in them. The absence of tourists has brought the lagoon waters of the past back, which were suitable for taking baths.
As per ESA, CO2 emissions have massively dropped, concentrations of nitrogen dioxide decreased, as no power plants or cars are functioning in Italy. As per experts, similar drops in the global carbon emission were witnessed in the 2008 recession last time.
However, they also noted that complete shutdown means household carbon footprint may potentially increase, which can offset the decrease in global carbon emissions.
