The police have been searching for the vandals who defaced a 9/11 memorial that honors five local firefighters who died in the terrorist attacks.
The incident occurred in Washingtonville, New York, which is located just over sixty miles from New York City.
In a park located in the village of just under 6,000 residents, culprits defaced a 9/11 memorial by cutting off the flagpole and vandalizing its base with graffiti.
The memorial in the park stands in honor of five local firefighters, including Glenn Perry, Dennis Devlin, Mark Whitford, Gerry Nevins, and Bobby Hamilton, who died amid the terrorist attacks on the WTC.
Following the despicable act, the authorities have launched an investigation, determined to track down and identify the people responsible for the damages.
As Mayor Joseph Bucco announced, he was notified of the incident by a resident who took a photo of the vandalized memorial and sent it to him.
The mayor has also promised a reward of over $3,000 for information that would lead the police to the suspects.
According to the police, the vandals cut through the flagpole before toppling it over. The culprits are also believed to be the same troublemakers who vandalized another site just half a mile away on Tuesday.
As Mayor Bucco added, they will “leave no stone unturned” until they find the thugs responsible for the defacement of the memorial and bring them to justice.
