A young USPS worker was shot several times while delivering mail in Chicago’s Burnside neighborhood on Thursday morning.
The incident occurred just before noon when the 24-year-old female postal worker was delivering mail as she got struck by bullets fired from vehicles passing by at high speed.
According to the reports, the victim was shot four times and has sustained gunshot wounds to the stomach, buttocks, legs, and her head.
As the police have suggested, the USPS employee most likely wasn’t the shooters’ target. After getting shot, the victim was rushed to the University of Chicago Medical Center where she remains in a critical condition as of this writing.
Following the incident, the Chicago Police and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service confirmed that the investigation is still in its early stages.
“Chicago Division Postal Inspectors are responding to the area around 91st and Ellis following reports of a Letter Carrier shot. Please avoid the area,” the USPIS tweeted after the shooting.
The 24-year-old female worker appears to be the second USPS employee to get shot in the city of Chicago this year.
As the Chicago Tribune reported, a 47-year-old postal worker got shot in the face while dropping off parcels on the Southwest Side back in March.
According to the reports, the man was taken to the hospital where he was treated for his injury to the cheek and eventually released.
The recent shooting follows a bloody Labor Day weekend during which more than fifty people in Chicago were shot. As per the reports, 8 out of 51 shooting victims succumbed to their injuries.
