EU made an announcement previous year about how they have plans to create a European Travel Information and Authorization System, or ETIAS by next year for “pre-travel screening for security and migration risks of travelers benefiting from visa-free access to the Schengen area.”

The Schengen Area is a special area or zone that connects almost 26 countries. The unique part about the zone is that the zone has no internal borders for the European countries like Spain, Greece, France, Germany, Poland, and Italy.

Currently, US citizens enjoy freedom when it comes to traveling to European countries because they are allowed a 90 days visit without permission but European Travel Information and Authorization System is going to make changes to it.

The travelers that are allowed in European countries without and visa including US citizens will have to take the authorization before entering the marked zone.

The process for the same is not very difficult. All the traveler would have to do is to fill an online form along with a fee of just $8. This application will be valid for a period of 3 years.

The European Commission talking about the change in their statement said “Completing the online application should not take more than 10 minutes with automatic approval being given in over 95% of cases,”

They added, “We are aware of the European Union’s plan to implement its own travel information and authorization system, similar to the U.S. ESTA, to contribute to more efficient management of the EU’s external borders and improve internal security.” To answer the same a US State Department official said in a statement. “Each country has the right to determine its standards for entry.”

To make this clear the officials said: “ETIAS authorization is not a visa.” ETIAS authorization will just be a mark of security for the countries.
