With the spread of novel coronavirus, several airports around the world have closed down.
Due to the same, thousands of flights have been canceled and several airlines have lost millions and millions due to the same.
The policy anyhow says that if the airline is canceling the flight, the company is supposed to pay the passenger a refund for their tickets.
Following this, a would-be passenger of United Airlines has sued the airlines for not giving him a refund for his canceled ticket.
The person who filed the complaint is a police officer from Minnesota and has filed a case against the airlines in U.S. District Court in the Northern District of Illinois.
He filed the case following the denial by the airlines on refund of his flight tickets.
The officer had booked 3 tickets worth $1,521.45 for his trip from Hilton Head Island to Chicago via a connecting flight.
His flight was scheduled on the 4th of April but with the outbreak of pandemic and shutting down of the airports, his flight was canceled.
As per the document the officer presented in the court, he was denied a refund completely. The airlines told him that he can either take credit for one year or can rebook his ticket.
A new rule in the situation put by the US government seems to be supporting the man’s claim for refund. The rule says that the airlines would have to give a refund to the passengers who are asking for it.
When questioned on the same, the United said that they have not been served with the documents yet and so they have no idea of the decision court has taken.
But stating the policy of the company, the spokesperson explained that the passengers are at complete freedom of taking credit or rebooking their flights for a later date.
