Welcoming a newborn into the family is an exciting and joyful time for the parents (perhaps even more for the grandparents!). But for older siblings, the reception can be mixed.

Of course, there are kids who jump at the opportunity at finally having a kid brother or sister that they can play with and share all their hobbies with. But if one has gotten used to being the center of attention, a certain amount of jealousy can be expected and perhaps even some resentment against the one who has supplanted one’s place in the family (no matter how incredulous that assumption might be).

Such is the case with 2-year-old Piper who upon finding out that her newborn baby sister was coming home proceeds to have a very loud meltdown. When it was clear that Piper wasn’t going to be placated anytime soon, her father brings out the camera in the middle of her tantrum and starts recording her.

Her dad tries to coax her with a few leading questions but Piper is adamant that she does not want anything to do with welcoming her sister. Her dad asks if she’ll give her baby sister a hug and she replies with an emphatic, “No!” Her replies were also the same when the dad asks if she’ll give mommy and daddy a huge. In fact, Piper even lays down on the floor when her father asks her to come over and give him a hug.

While Piper’s reaction may be expected, it’s likely a temporary state of affairs and before anyone knows it, it’s more than likely that Piper and her baby sister will grow up to become inseparable besties who wouldn’t hesitate to come to each other’s aid.point 348 |

The important thing for the parents is to make sure that they don’t end up ignoring the older sibling as they focus on taking care of the newborn. In fact, if they even imprint on the older sibling the importance of being a big brother or big sister, the implied responsibility can even make them more invested in becoming a role model for their younger sibling.
