Two Texas police officers were shot while responding to a domestic violence call before the shooter took his own life.
Officers Ismael Chavez and Edelmiro Garza were killed upon arriving at the home at Queta Avenue and South 35th street at around 3:30 pm.
Other cops arrived at the home and found the suspected gunman, 23-year-old Audon Ignacio Caramillo, holding his weapon.
As officers ordered the gunman to lower his gun, Caramillo turned the weapon on himself and took his own life.
“The officers did not draw their weapon, did not fire, did not stand a chance,” said Police Chief Victor Rodriguez, KRGV reported.
Ignacio Caramillo had been previously arrested for assault and DUI charges, according to authorities.
Rep. Vicente Gonzales said in a statement: “This is devastating news to our community. My heart breaks for these fallen officers and their families.
“They served McAllen bravely and honorably and I will keep them in my prayers.”
Chavez had been with the department for almost three years while Garza had been working with them for almost nine years.
Authorities are still investigating the shooting.
Rodriguez added: “We are weakened for the moment, but the strength and resolve we have to serve our communities, all of us here, will allow us to do what we do every day and what our officers do every day.
“In the face of adversity, we rise and serve nonetheless.”
Texas Attorney General wrote on Twitter: “Our prayers and full support are with the valient men and women of the #CityofMcAllen PD this evening. This office will provide any assistance requested in the days ahead. We are grateful for police in McAllen and around this great state.”
