When parents plan to have babies for a long time, their pregnancy means a lot for them.

Miranda and Josh Crawford, who are both nurses, had the same experience with those parents.
They have been wanted their kids for a long time and they used In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) to have their first daughter, Joslyn. A year after the birth of Joslyn, Miranda decided she wanted a bigger family.

Miranda and Josh both thought of having a family of five or six over the course of the next two years and had decided to try IVF again, because they were unable to conceive naturally due to complications.
After six weeks doctors transferred two embryos into Miranda’s uterus, they got a news that they were having twins. Both embryos were successfully implanted into the uterus.

However, four days later, the couple got an unbelievable news: they thought they were having twins, but Miranda was actually pregnant with 4 babies, quadruplets!

How can this happen although doctors transferred two embryos?

“I was shocked, the doctor was shocked,” Miranda said. “Never had that happened in his entire career.”

Other than the fact that they were not expecting four kids on their way, everything went well with the pregnancy. Parents and doctors were worried about the miscarriage or premature birth but the babies were born at 34 weeks.

All of their babies were healthy. They were around four-and-a-half to five-and-a-half pounds each.

The most amazing thing about this birth is that they are not just quadruplets. Miranda gave birth to two sets of identical twins!
Do you remember doctors transferred two embryos to Miranda’s uterus? Each one split to two and became two sets of identical twins.

“Embryo splitting occurs approximately in one out of 100 embryo transfers. The chance of this outcome is approximately one in 10,000. This could also occur in a natural conception, but the chance of that is much rarer,” Dr. James Grifo said.

Miranda and Josh now have five kids at home: Joslyn, Mia, Madison, Jackson, and James. They are all healthy and parents are so happy to create a big family.

Four infants are not what they expected but Miranda and Josh are taking a good care of the babies as they are organized and professional nurses. And even baby Joslyn is helping her parents.
