President Donald Trump is showing interest in purchasing the island of Greenland for its resources.
He repeatedly asked his advisers with ‘varying degrees of seriousness’ if it would be possible for the United States to buy Greenland for its geopolitical significants and resources.
“What do you guys think about that?” the president asked a table of associates when the idea of purchasing the autonomous Danish territory first came to be, said a source to the Wall Street Journal. “Do you think it would work?”
It is not clear how the United States would go about acquiring Greenland after the two failed attempts to purchase it for $100 million in 1946 and before that the State Department also tried in 1867.
The 811,000-square-mile island has 56,000 occupants and even though it is in North American waters, the self-governing land is European. Its security policy is managed by Copenhagen.
Trump came up with the idea after he’d heard that Denmark was experiencing financial issues due to the subsidies it pays to Greenland.
Greenland depends on $591 million of subsidies from Denmark per year, which is about 60 percent of their annual budget.
Trump will make his first visit to Denmark next month but his visit seems to be unrelated.
One internet user commented: “I Can’t understand why people are laughing about this (or is it just because it is Trump) America certainly made a smart move when they purchased Alaska for $ 7.2 million or roughly 2 cents an acre in 1867 along with all it’s natural resources.”
Another wrote: “1. Am I the only one that didn’t know Greenland was for sale? 2. Since when can one country just “buy” another country?”
A third said: “That is a really wonderful idea! Greenland would provide a strategic location, and it could become a vacation paradise after global warming takes hold there. Trump is genius!”
