A female Trump supporter was shot in the chest inside the Capitol on Wednesday after dozens of armed MAGA supporters breached security perimeters.
The woman passed away hours later but it was not yet clear who shot the victim. Many police officers were also left injured after the chaotic scenes broke out.
According to law enforcement sources, at least one explosive device was discovered near the Capitol.
Police enforced a 6 pm curfew and the entire DC National Guard was deployed to help stop the violence. However, protestors kept on occupying the Capitol hours after the violence started.
The Federal Protective Service, Virginia National Guard, Secret Service, and Arlington, Virginia, Police Department also responded to assist the Capitol Police.
The protesters made their way up the stairs around 2:15 pm, clashing with police officers as they pushed through barricades and other security measures.
It is not immediately clear what led to the shooting or if a law enforcement officer was involved. Photos showed officers with their weapons drawn.
By 5:30 pm, the Capitol was still overrun by protesters
The president posted a video on Twitter at 4:17 pm, telling his supporters: “I know you’re in pain. I know you’re hurt. We had an election that was stolen from us. But you have to go home now.”
The social media platform labeled the video with a warning: “This claim of election fraud is disputed, and this Tweet can’t be replied to, Retweeted, or liked due to a risk of violence.”
The tweet came after President-elect Joe Biden held a news conference to address the situation.
“This is not dissent, it’s disorder. It’s chaos. It borders on sedition. And it must end now. I call on this mob to pull back and allow the work of democracy to go forward,” he said.
