While Babbitt was rushed outside the Capitol building after the shooting, she later succumbed to her injuries. An investigation into her death has since been launched.

As two witnesses of the fatal shooting suggested, the female protester may have been gunned down by the police while trying to breach the fortified area.

Recalling the terrifying moment, John Sullivan, the founder of Insurgence USA, a left-wing activist group, revealed that the protesters encountered guards who refused to move under pressure as they attempted to reach the main entrance to the chamber.

While Sullivan told CNN he wasn’t at the Capitol to protest, he didn’t reveal what brought him to the building at the time of the riot.

“All we see is these guns coming out of the doorway, just guns, and all you can see is their hands. You could not see faces,” he told CNN.

“Right when I saw that I was yelling to people: ‘Guys, there is guns, you don’t want to go through there. They’re going to shoot.’”

Following Sullivan’s warning, Babbitt attempted to climb through the broken window. Shortly after, a gunshot could be heard and the protester collapsed to the floor.

“The second that she climbed through the window, she got shot right in the neck area and fell backwards,” he added.

“I just remember, like, the sense of shock and sorrow that somebody just died and did not need to die because she didn’t have a weapon and she was not violent.”

Responding to CNN’s Anderson Cooper’s question whether Babbitt was shot by the police, Sullivan said: “I don’t know if it was police or private security guard. I assume it is police of everything that we have met up to that point.”

As the Insurgence USA founder added, he attempted to deescalate the tension before the shooting occurred.

“By no means am I there on the Trump side or the MAGA side, but I don’t want to see people get hurt unnecessarily especially when there should be a better way to go about it,” Sullivan said.

“I remember just coming up and seeing one of [the officers] crying and saying they want to go home to their kids.”

The case remains under investigation.
