President Donald Trump has ramped up the pressure on Mike Pence as he wrongly suggested that the Vice President has the power to reject electoral votes.
Ahead of January 6, Trump has repeatedly put pressure on Pence in an attempt to get the Vice President to help him overturn Joseph Biden’s election win.
In his Tuesday tweet, the President falsely wrote that Pence, who will preside a joint session of the United States Congress during which electoral votes will be tallied, has the power to reject the votes.
“The Vice President has the power to reject fraudulently chosen electors,” Trump tweeted, putting Pence in a challenging position.
As Trump previously expressed, he expects the Vice President to do his best to keep him in the White House for four more years even though Pence doesn’t have the power to legally do so.
“I hope Mike Pence comes through for us. He’s a great guy. Of course if he doesn’t come through I won’t like him quite as much,” Trump said during a Monday rally in Georgia.
Despite Trump’s brazen demands, Pence’s role in the joint session of Congress remains largely ceremonial, whereas he doesn’t have the power to change the outcome of the election.
