Former President Donald Trump has parted ways with five of his impeachment lawyers only days before his trial is set to begin.
South Carolina attorneys Deborah Barbier and Butch Bowers, who were expected to be one of Trump’s lead attorneys, are no longer with his defense team.
CNN also reported that Johnny Gasser and Greg Harris, two former South Carolina federal prosecutors, and North Carolina attorney Josh Howard, who was recently added to the team, have also left.
According to the news outlet, a person familiar with the partings said that Trump wanted the lawyers to argue that there was mass election fraud. He also wanted the lawyers to argue that the election was stolen from him.
Former Trump campaign adviser Jason Miller told CNN: “The Democrats’ efforts to impeach a president who has already left office is totally unconstitutional and so bad for our country.
“In fact, 45 Senators have already voted that it is unconstitutional. We have done much work, but have not made a final decision on our legal team, which will be made shortly.”
The former president has struggled to find lawyers willing to take the case after he became the first president in US history to be impeached twice.
The trial is set to begin the week of February 8 on a charge that Trump incited his supporters to invade Congress days before President Joe Biden’s inauguration.
Trump aides and Republicans have reportedly made clear that they intend to make a simple argument: Trump’s trial is unconstitutional as he is no longer in office.
