President Donald Trump’s unprecedented farewell event will take place at Joint Base Andrews on the morning of Joe Biden’s inauguration.
Trump, who announced that he will not attend the President-elect’s inauguration, then plans to fly to his residence in Mar-a-Lago before his successor takes the office at noon.
According to Reuters, sources said that the plan could change and it was not clear whether the President would speak on Wednesday.
The Biden family will be staying at the Blair House, just across the street from the White House.
After Trump’s ceremonial farewell, he will fly to Palm Beach, Florida, to start his post-presidency.
White House advisers have urged Trump to host the Bidens for coffee or tea, a tradition by the outgoing first couple for the incoming first couple. But an administration official told Reuters that there has been no sign the President is willing to host Biden on the morning of the inauguration.
Departing while he is still the president will let Trump use the call sign ‘Air Force One’ for his flight to Mar-a-Lago.
If he left after Biden takes the oath, he would have to ask the president-elect to allow him to use the plane. All outgoing presidents make the request but it wouldn’t have the ‘Air Force One’ sign as that can only be used when the current president is on board, the Daily Mail reported.
When former President Barack Obama left DC, the aircraft used the call sign ‘Special Mission 44.’ If the same process followed, Trump’s call sign would be ‘Special Mission 45.’
Reports also say that Trump is planning to issue more pardons before his departure.
