Georgia’s Republican Secretary State Brad Raffensperger would re-certify President Donald Trump’s defeat after President-elect Joe Biden won the state for the fourth time.
Raffensperger said in a press conference: “We have now counted legally-casted ballots three times and the results have remained unchanged.
“As secretary of state, I have worked to secure the vote for all Georgians. On day one, we outlawed ballot harvesting. We strengthened signature match through the GBI training and moved towards an auditable paper-ballot system.”
Raffensperger continued: “I am the first secretary of state to implement a driver’s-license requirement for online absentee-ballot applications, which strengthened the security of our absentee-ballot process.
“Whether it is the president of the United States or a failed gubernatorial candidate, disinformation regarding election administration should be condemned and rejected.
“Integrity matters. Truth matters.”
During the news conference, Raffensperger said the state will re-certify the results and name electors to the Electoral College.
The electors are scheduled to meet on December 14 to officially elect the next President of the United States.
“All of this talk of a stolen election, whether it’s Stacey Abrams or the President of the United States, is hurting our state,” he added, WSB-TV reported.
Mr. Trump took to Twitter and wrote: “The Republican Governor of Georgia refuses to do signature verification, which would give us an easy win. What’s wrong with this guy? What is he hiding?”
On Saturday, the president reportedly called Georgia’s Republican Gov. Brian Kemp and asked him to convince legislators to overturn Joe Biden’s victory.
Mr. Trump also wanted absentee ballot signatures audited. According to CNN, Kemp denied the president’s request.
In a statement issued to NBC News, Kemp’s office said Georgia law prohibits the governor from interfering in elections.
It reads: “As the Governor has said repeatedly, he will continue to follow the law and encourage the Secretary of State to take reasonable steps – including a sample audit of signatures – to restore trust and address serious issues that have been raised.”
The call occurred before Mr. Trump traveled to Georgia for a rally on behalf of GOP Senate candidates Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue.
During the rally, he came on stage and declared: “You know we won Georgia, just so you understand.”
