President Donald Trump appeared at campaign rallies for two Georgia senators and claimed he won the state during the November election.
Speaking to supporters gathered in Valdosta, Mr. Trump claimed: “You know we won Georgia, just so you understand.”
The president lost Georgia by under 12,000 votes to President-elect Joe Biden, who won with 306 electoral votes.
Without providing evidence, the president said: “They cheated and rigged our presidential election, but we’ll still win.”
His remarks prompted the crowd gathered on the tarmac to chant: “Stop the Steal!”
The president traveled to the state to give Republican Senators David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler a boost ahead of their runoff elections next year.
This comes after Mr. Trump called Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp to pressure him to overturn Joe Biden’s victory.
He also asked Kemp to order an audit of signatures on ballot.
After the call, the governor said on Twitter that he called for a signature audit three times to “restore confidence in our election process and to ensure that only legal votes are counted in Georgia.”
Kemp’s office said in a statement issued to NBC News that Georgia law prohibits the governor from interfering in elections.
“As the Governor has said repeatedly, he will continue to follow the law and encourage the Secretary of State to take reasonable steps — including a sample audit of signatures — to restore trust and address serious issues that have been raised,” it reads.
This comes after former President Barack Obama appeared at a virtual rally to support two Democrat candidates Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock.
