President Donald Trump asked the lawmakers to approve $2,000 stimulus checks as he described the $900 billion Covid relief bill as an unsuitable disgrace.
In a video shared on Twitter, Trump called on Congress to increase the stimulus checks to $2,000 from ‘ridiculously low’ $600.
“I am asking Congress to amend this bill and increase the ridiculously low $600 to $2,000, or $4,000 for a couple,” he said in the video.
“I am also asking Congress to immediately get rid of the wasteful and unnecessary items from this legislation, and to send me a suitable bill, or else the next administration will have to deliver a covid relief package, and maybe that administration will be me,” he expressed.
Trump’s tweet came less than 24 hours after Congress passed the measure.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi quickly responded to Trump’s post and said Democrats would be ready to return to the Capitol and approve the $2,000 checks.
She wrote on Twitter: “Republicans repeatedly refused to say what amount the President wanted for direct checks.
“At last, the President has agreed to $2,000 – Democrats are ready to bring this to the Floor this week by unanimous consent. Let’s do it!”
One person commented: “He’s right…600 is not enough, however, yesterday he touted it was his doing that got 600 and now he’s using it as an election leverage. I’m sick of this!”
Another wrote: “In 24 hours I agreed Ilhan Omar and Trump , have I gone mad? Seriously the 600 dollars was a slap in the face.”
A third added: “Thank you!! Why does the bill include foreign aid, its American tax payer money!! Struggling families need more than $600.”
