Alan Dershowitz, one of the members of President Trump’s legal team, has said that a President can abuse power if it helps get them reelected.
While speaking in the Senate trial, Dershowitz said that any abuse of presidential power that helps him get reelected is not impeachable and no President can be impeached for trying to get re-elected.
He even said that if Trump hands Alaska over to Vladimir Putin, it would not be an impeachable offense.
Dershowitz said: “If a president does something which he believes will help him get elected in the public interest that cannot be the kind of quid pro quo that results in impeachment.”
He said that the “abuse of power” is not impeachable as Trump is doing everything to get elected in the public interest.
He also said that he is not a part of Trump’s legal team but would present arguments about impeachment.
He said: “I’m not part of the regular team that will be making strategic decisions and participating in questions about whether there should be witnesses or not.”
Previously, President Donald Trump’s legal team argued that the impeachment case against him is a ‘charade’ and Trump did “nothing wrong” in dealings with Ukraine.
After the House managers said that President Trump abused the power of his office and accused him of covering up after being caught, Trump’s legal team filed a 110-page response to the charges.
They branded the impeachment case against trump “flimsy” and a “dangerous perversion of the constitution”.
Trump’s lawyers argued that the impeachment was not the violation of any law and he did nothing wrong by raising the issue of his political rivals with a foreign leader.
They also said that the impeachment case against him should be rejected.
