26-year-old Angela Ponce from Seville has made history by becoming the first transsexual model to represent Spain in the Miss Universe pageant. She won the national qualifying contest against 22 other beautiful contestants.
Ms. Ponce will now have the chance to compete as a representative of Spain at the prestigious Miss Universe 2018 pageant that will be held in the Philippines this year.
“Bringing the name and colours of Spain before the universe is my great dream,” Ms. Ponce wrote on Instagram after she won.
“My goal is to be a spokesperson for a message of inclusion, respect and diversity not only for the LGBTQ+ community but also for the entire world.”
The beauty queen also represented Cadiz in the 2015 Miss World Spain competition. However, she lost to Miss Barcelona Mireia Lalaguna who won the top prize.
In spite of Ms. Ponce’s participation, Miss Word Organization didn’t accept transgender contestants at that time.
“At least I have the regional (Cadiz) crown on my head,” Angela said in response.
Miss Universe Spain 2018
It was in 2012 when rival contest Miss Universe announced that it would let transgender beauty queens after Canadian model Jenna Talackova successfully sued the MU Canada organizers for disqualifying her for being transgender.
During the pageant in May 2012, Jenna made it into the top 12. However, she didn’t make it to top five. Even so, she was one of the four contestants who received the title of Miss Congeniality.
Ms. Ponce, who is 5 feet and 9 inches (181 centimeters) tall, was crowned Miss Universe Spain at the same time as the LGBT community’s celebration of Pride Month. She will now represent Spain at Miss Universe 2018.
