A transgender woman becomes the first in the world to have a vagina made from the skin of a tilapia fish.
35-year-old Maju had collapsed genitals that started to shrink and close after a botched surgery. Thanks to tilapia skin, she has been given the chance to have a ‘proper sex life.’
Neovaginoplasty, a highly complicated procedure, involves using a tubular-shaped acrylic mold wrapped with the tilapia skin in the form of a biological prosthesis to reconstruct and extend the vaginal canal.
The new vagina is created by inserting two separate molds. The first device, wrapped with the marine membrane, was inserted inside the vagina for 6 days. The sterilized and odor-free skin shows stimulatory cell growth properties.
Because it is packed with type 1 collagen, it promotes healing and has enough elasticity and firmness that is as resilient and strong as human skin. The fish membrane recoated the vaginal canal walls and was absorbed into the body. It transforms into cellular tissue just like that of a real vagina.
Made from silicone, the second device is designed to stay inside the vagina for up to 6 months to keep the walls from closing.
“We were able create a vagina of physiological length, both in thickness and by enlarging it, and the patient has recovered extremely well. She is walking around with ease, has no pain and is urinating normally. In a couple months we believe she will be able to have sexual intercourse,” said Professor Leonardo Bezerra.
The process is another breakthrough in gynecological surgery which tackles insensitive predicaments using the skin of fish as a substitute for human regenerative tissue.
