In an emotional video, a zookeeper was seen having a heartwarming reunion with an elephant 35 years after the pair were separated.
Animal trainer Peter Adams and Kirsty the Elephant met in the 1980s at Calderpark Zoo in Glasgow, Scotland.
After spending many precious days together, however, the pair was divided when the elephant was shipped off to Chester Zoo, where she met a new trainer named Judy, and eventually to Germany.
While Peter never thought he would see his friend again, the two were reunited at Neunkirchen Zoo in Germany 35 years after they were separated. And as Kirsty proved in the touching reunion, elephants really do never forget.
“Of course, I was wondering if there was any truth to the phrase ‘elephants never forget,’” Mr. Adams said, explaining how he found out that Kirsty was living in a German zoo while he was searching the internet.
Fortunately, the zoo helped arrange the reunion and captured the sweet moment on camera.
“Kirsty recognized Peter Adams, who outwardly has changed very much, by his voice,” the spokesperson for the Neunkirchen Zoo said.
“That she allowed me to get close and accepted me was a very emotional experience for me. I will always keep that memory in my heart,” Peter added, speaking of his get-together with 52-year-old Kirsty.
Despite her age, Kirsty is said to be in a good health condition and is enjoying her ‘retirement’ to the fullest. As for Peter, he admitted he would do everything in his power to visit her as much as possible in the future.
