A group of farmers is using their old tractors to play a giant game of football. The South Hams Vintage Machinery club found an epic way to use their old tractors and held a match at South Hams Vintage Rally, in Knightsbridge, South Devon.
There were two teams – the Big Reds and Little Greys. The two participants on each team competed in two games on August 11, 2019.
The rules of the game were same except they can’t have more than two touches once on the dribble, or it would turn into a demolition derby.
39-year-old Matthew Shute is the Chairman of the Machinery club. He said that the idea came from one of the members, Keith Collins, who brought it up at a committee meeting as a fun event for our rally.
He explained: “It’s just a normal game of football with slightly different rules, each tractor could only touch the ball twice to avoid collisions. We even had a referee and his word was final – if he didn’t like what he saw he had red and yellow cards at the ready.”
“It’s something we haven’t seen in the west country before which is what we aimed to do to attract people in.”
Everyone loved the game. Even the children enjoyed it too much. They were screaming to encourage the players.
Now they are planning to improve the game. They will have a meeting to decide how to make the game better next year.
Matthew said the hardest part of the game was to avoid each other while playing. A couple of times, they were so close to collisions but they had been training every week since February so nothing bad happened.
Matthew says that the game was a hit and it would be amazing to get more teams involved. Everyone had a lot of fun playing or watching the game.
Matthew said: “The main thing is that we all had a lot of fun, everyone enjoyed watching the game. Each team’s fans were very passionate, the teams were there to entertain but the crowd was really good, they backed who they supported.”
“I think if we can get that sort of passion from people watching then who’s to say this can’t become a bigger attraction for years to come.”
