A dozen tourists were forced to write ‘I am so sorry’ 500 times after the police have caught them breaking lockdown orders in India.
According to the reports, the officials have confirmed that ten foreigners were caught strolling around the Himalayan foothills city of Rishikesh, which is well-known among spiritualists who go there to practice meditation and yoga, amid nation-wide lockdown.
As per the Indian lockdown orders, residents may only leave their homes for essential purposes such as shopping for medicine and food.
Nevertheless, 10 tourists, who are reportedly from Australia, Mexico, Austria, and Israel, were caught walking outside as if nothing had happened.
After the tourists were spotted by the police, officer Vinod Sharma made them repent by forcing them to write “I did not follow the rules of lockdown so I am so sorry” hundreds of times.
According to Sharma, he decided to proceed with the uncommon punishment in order to teach the tourists a lesson and, presumably, send out a clear message to other lockdown violators in the area.
Meanwhile, the police across the country have come up with other unique approaches to dealing with curfew violators.
In dozens of pictures and videos going viral on the internet, police officers were seen beating violators with sticks and batons while forcing others to perform exercises as punishment.
One clever officer has also come up with the idea of wearing a coronavirus-inspired helmet in an attempt to convince people to stay at home rather than go outside.
The cop in question is Rajesh Babu, a patrol officer from the city of Chennai, who’s been busy enforcing quarantine rules and regulations following India’s decision to put the entire country on lockdown.
To get his point across, Mr. Babu walks around in a unique virus-like helmet that he created to educate people about the dangers of failing to comply with social distancing orders.
“We take all the steps, but still people come out on the streets. Therefore, this corona helmet is one of the steps we are taking to ensure that people are aware of the seriousness of the police. The helmet is an attempt to do something different,” the officer said in an interview with Asian News International.
“When I wear this, the thought of coronavirus comes into the minds of the commuters. Especially, the children react strongly after seeing this and want to be taken home.”
As for the reason behind his invention, Babu admitted he tried to do something different because plenty of people aren’t taking the lockdown seriously.
“We had been talking to the public. But awareness among them is very less. So we thought of doing something different,” he added.
