The first cruise ship returned to bushfire-hit Kangaroo Island in Australia after the recent bushfires have burnt more than 200,000 hectares of land.

The tourists said they wanted to come to spend their money to help the locals.

Sun Princess Cruise Ship returned to bushfire-hit Kangaroo Island in Australia on Sunday and one of the passengers named Karen Hall said: “We just wanted to come ashore to spend some money and to try and help the locals.”

The owner of Kangaroo Island Safari and Kangaroo Island Ocean Safari, Tony Coppins, said that the tourists have stopped coming to the island as they think the whole island is on fire.

He said that this visit will work as a message that people can still visit the island as not the whole part of the island is on fire.

Tony Coppins said: “…but the economy has been affected because people have stopped coming. They think the whole island is on fire and it’s not, so we really need to send that message out that the island is still accessible.”

“We’ve still got planes flying in, ferries coming every day. There’s probably a better time than ever to come to Kangaroo Island because there’s less people here at the moment.”

The Australian government has announced to give more than $50 million to the country’s tourism industry.

Trade, tourism and investment minister Simon Birmingham was also among those visiting Kangaroo Island.

Trade, tourism and investment minister Simon Birmingham said: “And that’s why we got to project the message, not only that we’re open for business, but that the vast majority of our country is not impacted by the bushfires and can still offer exactly the same experiences as people had looked for before.”
