She was terrified and screaming in fear, that was quite unusual. Grace’s parents, Larry, the dad, and Erin, the mum and a teacher, were also unable to hide their fear.
The toddler, Grace, was trying to hide from an “EVIL Monster”, that she only was supposed to be seeing.
She started suffering from seizures resulting from a terrible rare disease. Moreover, she was also not able to speak and walk. Her parents had no idea what she was going through.
Erin and Larry took her to a hospital in Chicago, where they came to know that she was suffering from a rare disease “Autoimmune encephalitis”.
Autoimmune encephalitis is a fatal condition that causes the body’s immune system to attack normal and healthy brain cells, resulting in swelling and infection.
There may be different triggers to this condition such as measles, mumps, herpes, and rubella.
Erin, a mum-of-three told that Grace was experiencing these seizures from weeks after they came from vacations, in Florida.
Erin and Larry were facing the worst experience of their life, according to them.
Her parents brought her to Lurie Children’s Hospital when their neurologist asked them to seek help from a specialist. After reaching Lurie Children Hospital, Grace’s speed started to decline and it was terrifying for all.
What was happening was really heart-wrenching, as she was a very vocal child who used to tell full stories using full sentences. But now, she not only faced a decline in voice but also lost the ability to walk.
Erin told, “She seemed to think there was someone else in the room, and she seemed scared of that person. It was terrifying”.
Grace was experiencing hallucinations, screaming and ripping out her IV. She was getting treatment for autoimmune encephalitis, but as soon as she started to improve, she faced a cardiac arrest and was admitted to ICU.
After such a nightmare, finally, Grace started recovery and was released after 2 weeks in the hospital. However, the treatment continued to prevent relapse.
Her parents, Erin, and Larry are thankful to doctors at Lurie for her fast recovery.
Afterward, she also returned to preschool. Although she is still on medications, she has survived the fatal condition.
Her parents are lucky to have her back and she loves her scooter and baby dolls as before.
