A woman who was found alive after being pronounced dead at a funeral home has tragically passed away.
20-year-old Timesha Beauchamp passed away at Children’s Hospital in Detroit, said attorney Geoffrey Fieger in a press release.
Her family first called emergency services on August 23 after she appeared to be experiencing severe breathing difficulties.
Paramedics, emergency medical technicians, and a doctor who did not go to the scene declared the woman dead after a first responder said by phone that Beauchamp had been unresponsive for about 30 minutes.
An hour later, the funeral Cole Funeral Home called 911 after a staff who was about to embalm her saw her chest moving.
Beauchamp’s godmother, a nurse, tried to tell paramedics that she had seen her breathing. She also believed that the 20-year-old had a pulse.
The grieving family said: “This is the second time our beloved Timesha has been pronounced dead, and this time she isn’t coming back.”
In addition to cerebral palsy, Beauchamp also had other medical conditions. Her family has filed a federal lawsuit against the four responders who arrived at their home.
Fieger said: “She died as a result of massive brain damage that was suffered when Southfield paramedics wrongly declared her dead, and failed to provide her much-needed oxygen.
“Instead, she was sent to a funeral home which then discovered that her eyes were open, and that she was alive.”
Johnny Menifee, Southfield fire department chief, has said the city is investigating the incident.
In August, he said to local media that Beauchamp might’ve been found alive due to auto-resuscitation or ‘Lazarus syndrome.’
