According to J. Matthew Knight, a renowned dermatologist from the Knight Dermatology Institute, scrubbing off your dead skin cells with a shower loofah is a mistake.

Apparently, these skin cells actually get caught in the loofah, allowing things such as bacterias and molds to grow in them.
Since the shower environment is so moist and warm, bacteria can grow exponentially in the loofah, which can lead to many health risks including infections.

So, basically, you are scrubbing yourself with dead skin cells every time you shower.

This is why 98% of dermatologists urge us to throw away the shower puffs as soon as possible.

If you are still reluctant to toss away your current shower loofah, dermatologists recommend these tips to lower your health risk.

1. Wash your puff to make sure all the dead skin is not trapped inside the loofah.
2. Dry out your loofah between uses.
3. Replace the loofah with a new one often. Dermatologists recommend getting a new loofah every couple of months.

If you DO decide to get rid of your loofah, don’t worry about not being able to exfoliate your skin to keep them clean. There are other good alternatives like scrubbing gloves and soap dispensing loofah available!

For the scrubbing gloves, all you have to do is put them on and put a little bit of a soap to start scrubbing away! Since it doesn’t have the layers for the skin cells to be trapped in, the gloves will lower the chance of getting any bacterial infections.
