A powerful earthquake with 7.
5 magnitudes hit the Russian-controlled Kuril Islands on 25th March, rattling homes and shops, and prompting tsunami fears.
According to Russia, the epicenter of the earthquake was 130 miles south-east of a town called Severo-Kursk. The town has a population of 2,500 people.
Footage from the island revealed furniture shaking with objects strewn over the floor of apartments and shops, as people scrambled to exit shopping malls and buildings on Russia’s Pacific coast.
There were no casualties reported but the people living in Severo-Kurlisk were moved to higher ground due to tsunami fears. Hawaii was issued a tsunami watch but it was later canceled, as officials said North America’s west coast or Alaska was not under danger.
The Russian emergencies ministry declared a small wave around 1.6 ft high hitting the Kuril islands. It said that local residents would remain in safe place for some time because the threat of tsunami remained. Valery Limarenko, Sakhalin governor, said that for them, the safety of the people is the most important.
One video showed an alarming impact in Paramushi’s apartment, where items were scattered across the floor. The internet and electricity were disrupted on the island and there were zero reports of fatality.
Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsy’s resident said that it was shaking for some time. Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky is the regional capital of the Kamchatka region with a population of 180,000.
Another resident of the island noted that they were on the fifth floor and the shaking went on for a long time, and then cupboards hit against walls, doors rattled.
They added that although they are used to earthquakes in the region, this one scared them and their six-yead-old grandson was terrified.
Now, the kid does not want to step away from them at home. Several others expressed their fear due to the earthquake.
