Martin Scorsese’s ‘The Irishman’ has landed on Netflix after early, exclusive cinema run and has already been dubbed a classic by fans and reviewers.
The crime epic revolves around Frank Sheeran, played by Hollywood star Robert De Niro, who gets involved with a crime family and starts working for Teamster Jimmy Hoffa, played by Al Pacino.
“The film chronicles one of the greatest unsolved mysteries in American history, the disappearance of legendary union boss Jimmy Hoffa, and offers a monumental journey through the hidden corridors of organized crime,” the movie’s synopsis reads.
Based on Charles Brandt’s ‘I Heard You Paint Houses,’ the film incorporates a mix of influential people from the 20th century as well as Sheeran’s transition from a World War II veteran into a gangster and a hitman.
Besides the incredible cast, The Irishman was also made possible thanks to state-of-the-art anti-aging technology that allowed Pacino and De Niro to relive their early lives on the screen.
“This is different, I think it is. I admit that there are – you know, Goodfellas and Casino have a certain style that I created for them – it’s on the page in the script, actually,” Director Martin Scorsese said of his latest gangster movie.
“Putting Goodfellas together was almost like an afterthought. At times I was kind of rushing, I felt I’d already done it because I’d played it all out in terms of the camera moves and the editing and that sort of thing.
“The style of the picture, the cuts, the freeze-frames, all of this was planned way in advance, but here it’s a little different.”
