One of the effects of the novel coronavirus is that people around the globe got to see the workers who are truly essential for the society.

These workers are your cashiers, truck drivers and the police force. Mailman and the postal service are also doing incredible work as well.

Emerson Weber, a fifth grade student in South Dakota, thought that her local mailman deserved the recognition for his work. Naturally, she wrote a letter to her mail carrier. Emerson said that Doug, the mail carrier, may know her as the girl who sends lots of letters and envelopes.

Emerson’s father said his daughter keeps in touch with those closest to her via mail. In an almost exclusive digitized world, people who are handwriting letters have gone down significantly. Emerson is different – not only does she handwrite the letters, she also enjoys decorating the envelopes as well.

In the letter that she wrote to Doug, Emerson thanked him for bringing happiness to people. “Well, I wanted to thank you for taking my letters and delivering them. You are very important in my life. I make people happy with my letters, but you do too” were her exact words.

The next day, the Webers received a pleasant surprise from Doug and his colleagues. Hugh Weber, Emerson’s father, told NPR that everyone was extremely moved by Emerson’s warm words, and thanked her for recognizing the importance of their work in these tough times.

However, more packages and letters were inbound for the Webers. When the US Postal Service’s newsletter shared Emerson’s letter, mail carriers from all around the US wrote to Emerson.

Hugh said that the letters contained very personal stories and warm words of gratitude for her daughter. From those who are working in the rural areas away from their families to those who felt like their livelihood was at danger, postal workers were grateful that someone out there recognized their work.

Emerson said that she will get back to everyone who sent her a letter. She says that she loves receiving letters as much as sending them, and said it was exciting that so many took their time to personally write to her.

We would also like to thank all the workers out there who allow the rest of us to stay indoors. Share this story with your friends, and be sure to follow us on Facebook for more stories like this one.
