Two young women in Texas face 180 days of imprisonment and a fine worth $2,000 after police orchestrated a sting operation after being tipped off by neighbors.
The thirty-one-year-old, Ana Isabel Castro-Gracia, and twenty-year-old, Brenda Stephanie Mata, were caught running beauty services in their houses, which is an apparent violation of stay-at-home order.
The neighbors of Ana and Brenda sent anonymous tips to Laredo Police Department through an application. The department said in its statement that both of the violators solicited customers independently via social media.
It noted that an undercover officer working on coronavirus task force enforcement detail contacted with each of the women to set up an appointment for cosmetic, beauty service, which is banned under the emergency ordinance.
Ana was arrested after she met the undercover officer posing as a customer requiring a nail service. The police noted that Ana admitted to operating a nail salon in her home as well as promoting her business on social media, not adhering to the current mayoral decree in place.
Brenda was arrested because she agreed to provide an eyelash service in her home for the undercover officer who was posing as her customer.
The department added that they remind the community that due to the emergency management plan being applied to contain the spread of coronavirus, police officers are working hard to address violations of the plan with enforcement.
The women were charged with Class B misdemeanor for not following the emergency management plan that carries $2000 fine, 180 days behind bars, or both. However, Governor Greg Abbott noted in a statement released on 7th May that the two women shouldn’t be subject to confinement.
The governor said that throwing Texans in prison who have had businesses shut down without any fault of them was nonsensical and he would not allow that to happen.
He called it absurd to release hardened criminals from prisons to control spreading of coronavirus but filling them up with such business owners.
