Two caring teens have been dubbed heroes after driving around in their car and rescuing helpless koalas they found on the way.
18-year-old Caleb and 19-year-old Micah from the Kangaroo Island have decided to save as many animals as possible after officials announced that at least 20,000 koalas on the island, out of the total population of 50,000, have died in recent fires.
In the video shared by the boys’ cousin, several koalas are seen taking shelter in the teens’ car after they took a break from driving around and looking for victims of bushfires.
According to Caleb and Micah, they also intend to take care of the koalas until they recover and are well enough to be returned to the wild.
“Amid the terrible bushfires in Australia, my cousins went out and saved as many koalas as they could. Good on ’em,” the teen boys’ cousin wrote on Reddit.
The kind act of the Good Samaritans came shortly after experts revealed that over 20,000 koalas have suffered a horrible death as raging bushfires burned more than 150,000 hectares of land on the popular tourist hotspot.
The Kangaroo Island, which is the country’s third-biggest island, was left in a devastating state after an out-of-control fire swept through half of the land.
According to hardworking rescuers who are now looking for surviving animals, at least 20,000 koalas have died in recent fires on the island.
“There is no food left, for those who didn’t perish in the fire, a lot of them will starve to death. People would talk about koalas being a pest species … but now there are a lot of koalas [that] perished in the fires,” Sam Mitchell of the Kangaroo Island Wildlife Park said.
“You can only find the injured koalas on the edge of the plantation, All the ones inside the ground would have been killed instantly,” firefighter Rick Fisher added.
According to the reports, the rescuers have come across thousands of burned bodies while searching the island for survivors.
