He was found by a group of teenagers who immediately came to his aid.

One of the teens, 16-year-old Bella, said the elderly man had significant injuries and was covered in blood.

“We were walking through Sefton Park, just going to the chippy on Lark Lane,” Bella said to Liverpool Echo.

“Next thing I turn around and I seen this man sat on a bench. The amount of blood on him was quite shocking.

“My friend, Lily Hamer, was next to me and I said Lily we need to go and help this man.”

Fortunately, the teens had received training in first aid so they knew they had to stop the bleeding. After asking the man for permission, the teen checked his injuries and found a large cut on the back of his head and lacerations above his eye.

“He told us he had been walking along near Sefton Park, he was just walking and a man ran up behind him and hit him,” Bella continued.

“Then he was on the floor and he said all he could see were feet flying at him.”

Bella’s other friend, 17-year-old David Southern, said: “We used tissues to stop some of the bleeding and asked for a lady who was pushing a pram if we could have a nappy to try and stem the blood coming from his neck.

“He was in quite a lot of shock so we made sure that people didn’t crowd him and waited with him until police and ambulance arrived.”

One person said: “These amazing girls and boys were administering first aid to the man… They calmed him down, held tissues and wipes to the multiple cuts on his head and face. They were so quick thinking and just sprung in to action.

“I was in awe of them and how they handled the situation. I just wanted their mums and dads to see this and to say how proud you should be of them.”
