A video of teens doing the ‘George Floyd Challenge’ has sparked outrage on social media.
Police have received several complaints and school officials were forced to launch an investigation after the video showing the teenagers re-enacting the death of Floyd went viral.
In the video, one of the teens can be seen lying on the ground while two others yelled: “Get the f*** down the ground!”
One of the teens knelt down on the ‘bound’ teen’s hands while another stood over his head and knelt on his neck for a few seconds.
Other children in the background can be heard laughing, with one saying: “That’s f***** up!”
The viral clip then shows one of the teens telling the ‘restrained’ teen to perform oral sex, triggering laughs from their friends.
In a statement released to WFSB-TV, the public school district said that the “administration became aware of a video in which youths from Old Saybrook Public Schools and others imitated the scene of the death of George Floyd. As soon as we became aware of the video, we initiated an investigation.”
One person commented: “But where do kids get ideas like this? They’re handed down, casually. Kids don’t teach themselves racism. Their parents do.”
Another wrote: “Kids absorb the ignorant attitudes of the people around them, imo. They don’t just invent their own types of biases.”
A third added: “Not a laughing matter but if this wasn’t done on school grounds not sure what the school has to do with any of it.”
Someone else added: “Teen brains are not fully developed. Another reason it is ludicrous to talk about having them vote.”
