A teenager froze to death after his father kicked him out of his house in an attempt to discipline him.
19-year-old Lyndon Turner was found lifeless in a car park in Chobham, England, in December 2020 after the teen froze to death following a dispute with his dad.
The incident began unrolling on December 1 when the young apprentice got into a fight with his father over his cannabis use.
As the inquest heard, Lyndon was involved in a minor car accident earlier that day. After the crash, the boy’s father, Graham Turner, blamed the crash on his son’s cannabis use.
Amid the family feud, which had been getting worse since the death of Lyndon’s mom three years ago, the father ordered his son to leave his family home in an attempt to teach the 19-year-old a lesson. The dad reportedly also told the son to stay with his friends instead.
After Lyndon left the house, he found himself in Chobham Common, a nature reserve, where he fell asleep in a car park after taking a rest following his six-mile walk.
On the following day, December 2, the teenager was found frozen to death by park visitors. As an assistant coroner explained, Lyndon died of “significant hypothermia” despite paramedics’ efforts to resuscitate him.
“I am satisfied he found himself in Chobham Common on the night of December 1, 2020, that he fell asleep during that period of time, and given the time of year it resulted in significant hypothermia which is directly causative of his death,” Dr Karen Henderson said.
Concluding the inquest, Dr Henderson noted that Lyndon died of unexpected consequences of an act as she sent her condolences to Mr Turner and the boy’s siblings.
“I accept the cause of death provided by the pathologist to the court as ketoacidosis complicating hypothermia. I am satisfied on the balance of probabilities that Lyndon was a regular user of cannabis,” the assistant coroner said.
“There were some difficulties with his family circumstances and due to a recent car accident, and concerns of his father that he had been using cannabis, that he was asked not to remain at home. Sadly, he did not choose to find somewhere else to live.”
