From a mother’s heartbreaking account: “On a summer’s day two years ago, my 14-year-old daughter Clio returned from a walk in tears.
She had met up with a boy.. they got on well, but the boy suggested they find a quiet spot to sit down, and it became clear he felt the preliminary introductions had gone on long enough.”
“Clio had to repeatedly say she did not want certain parts of her body to be touched intimately– the face of this boy had changed. “It was like he stopped seeing me as a person.. When I kept saying no, he got angry… he called me a b****”
Girls face difficulties not only within their community, but with society’s effects and how they view girls. There are numerous accounts of non-consensual and inappropriate touching, along with degrading comments that affect a girl’s mental and physical stability in their life.
Girls such as Clio may not be able to voice out their true opinions, but her mother tells us this story today so that people understand what is going on for girls their age. In the stream of s*xual coercion from boys their age, there are several girls who are frustrated and torn from these situations.
With social media being the center of communication and arrangements, online platform Everyone’s Invited has given the opportunity to voice their experiments anonymously if they cannot explicitly state their identity. This social media campaign has stories posted from girls as young as 11.
Some experiences states are about girls being drugged and assaulted from parties, others talk about how boys pressure the girls to send nude pictures to them.
Founder Soma Sara, 22, states: “In the holidays I grew up in London social circles and sex was a palpable presence throughout my teens. It could be sexual coercion, r*pe, catcalling, s*xual bullying. S*xual abuse didn’t just exist. It thrived.”
Schools who have received these reports give out disclosures, “The welfare of our students and alumni is of the utmost importance to us and we take any report or allegation made by a member of our community extremely seriously.”
They are progressing and condemning the problem before it spreads to a bigger one. Schools are doing their best, investigating and disciplining those who deserve it but these are statements from public schools. It is different for private schools.
Mother of Clio mentions how one of her relative’s daughter begged her parents to leave since teachers had refused to take her allegations of r*pe. The alleged boy had a reputation for s*xually assaulting drunk girls, but would not take action since the expulsion of the boy would tarnish their name.
The generation of girls now are growing up with a generation of boys whose “healthy natural curiosity about s*x has been turbo-charged by p*rnography.”
Girls rarely feel completely safe. Girls are being taken advantage of while being drunk, being groped at parties, being filmed without their knowledge.
