A 15-year-old girl who dreamed of becoming a teacher has tragically passed away from sepsis brought on by ovarian torsion.
Paige Jacobsen from Prescot, Merseyside experienced severe symptoms when she developed an infection due to the painful condition.
She was taken to Whiston Hospital on December 3 but suffered two cardiac arrests on her way to the hospital.
While being transferred to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, Paige had another cardiac arrest and died.
Ovarian torsion occurs when the ovary becomes twisted around the ligaments that support it. In some cases, fallopian tubes may become symptoms.
Its symptoms include nausea, vomiting, cramping, and severe and sudden pain in the lower abdomen. Sometimes, cramping, tenderness in the lower abdomen, and pain may come and go for many weeks if the ovary is trying to twist back to the right position.
Even though the condition is painful, the teen did not complain of experiencing pain. She was having irregular periods and later developed an infection which resulted in sepsis.
Paige’s friends have set up a GoFundMe page to help the family pay for the teen’s funeral expenses.
“We are preparing to bury our daughter which we thought we would never do,” her grieving parents Colin Atkinson and Leanne Jacobsen said in a statement.
“We are heartbroken our angel has grown her wings so early,” they said. “We loved Paige with all our hearts and a piece of us has died with her.
“She will be deeply missed by the whole family.”
The heartbroken family hoped to raise awareness of ovarian torsion and urged others to research the rare condition and look out for the warning signs.
“Any awareness raised to help any other family learn about this condition, even saving just one child will be amazing.”
